We have been led to believe for a long time, that butter should be avoided at all costs, if want our arteries not to get clogged up with cholesterol. Margarine has been the saviour. Problem with margarines are that the process includes a string of chemical processes. This includes fosforic acid, petroleum, bleach etc. The result of this is a grey slush which, of course, has to be dealt with to make it look and taste o.k. After colour and other additives have been added, there are still traces of chemicals like petroleum. The margarine Becel (Benecol) has been shown to have these. More alarming is that Becel (Benecol), according to the Swedish Livsmedelsverket, has shown to contain polyaromatic hydrocarbon. In this group you will find some of the most cancer causing substances known. That this is something that is promoted to be healthy and to be good for your heart, is very hard to take.
The Swedish Heart and Lung Foundation has decided to terminate cooperation with Becel (Benecol) because of uncertainties in how healthy margarine is. This despite the fact that Becel previously paid them many millions annually for the use of HLF´s symbol. Apparently HLF value their privacy more. Reasonably, this is a major blow to the credibility of Becel marketing.
As under the EU, products chemically modified plant sterols, as Becel pro-active (Benecol pro-active) are not to be marketed to contribute against heart disease.
